| Early in life, in the late '60s, I found the investment side of real estate much more interesting than the hospitality business about which I learned in the Hotel School. I entered a real estate lending training program at a major So. California bank, 5 years out of Cornell. I completed the full range of real estate related courses offered by UCLA Extension and a MBA in Finance at Univ. of So. Calif, both in evening programs. In my early '40s I abandoned working for others, spent some time as a sole practicioner in the commercial real estate brokerage business, then organized an investment partnership and developed a small shopping center in San Jose, as General Partner, in 1981. My partners and I still own that small shopping center, 24 years and much success later. That project has given me personal and financial freedom about which my still-employed friends can only dream. The majority of my time is now spent in travel, personal enjoyment, golf, tennis and fishing... and investing in start-up businesses ("Angel Investing"). I call Incline Village, NV home, but spend final week of most months in the San Francisco Bay area. The areas in which I believe I could offer most help to Entrepreneurship@Cornell students are (1) real estate development & management ( i.e. "income property" such as shopping centers, industrial/ business parks, office buildings, vs. single-family homes and built-to-sell projects, such as condo developments. I have no experience in built-to-sell projects.); and (2) real property financing & management. |
